A chance conversation with Daniel Bingham (Vitac.com.au) in 2006 resulted in the creation of the BlessIT.org. Over the years BlessIT.org's founder, Rob Flodine, had been seeking ways to assist others with the technological stuff he had learned in supporting his wife ALIKI in her fultime career as a singer, speaker, and communicator.
While Rob wears many hats in the management of Aliki's music ministry, he has spent considerable time creating and maintianing the website, which acts as a first point of contact for new inquiries, an online store for CD's, DVD's, backing tracks and message downloads. BlessIT.org aims to leverage that acquired knowledge to assist others.
Rob interest in all things "tech" started in his teens with he and brother David purchased their first computer a Sinclair ZX81. This colosus of computing featured an fully integrated 4 chip computer complete with 1k or memory and a membrane keyboard that allowed program in BASIC. Complete with cassette tape storage, it required a huge amount of patience with its wavering black and white screen shown on a dodgy TV which their father, Graeme, had resurrected from the junk heap.
It wasn't long before they upgraded to the superior Commodore VIC 20 with colour output and sound. This was a huge leap forward an many happy hours were spent playing earlier cartridge based games, and hand entering lines of basic code scoured from early computing magazines like "Byte". Soon came the Commodoare 64 and a move to floppy disks! During the early eighties Rob secured a part-time job with a Gold Coast computer store. He loved working with customers to help them purchase the machine best suited to their needs. Heading off to university changed the budget somewhat but also allowed access to uni resources. After a couple of years studying pure maths and computing Rob realised that the open nature of his science degree meant that he had not selected appropriate rerequisite first year subjects for his change to a computing major and decided to defer for a year or so while he determined exactly what he wanted to do; computer analyst or teacher! A string or jobs in a varierty of fields, from rental car franchise sales to automotive workshop manager to nothing to clear things up. Through out this time he had gained a Cab driving licence and tended to use this as a fall back option for many years.
In mid 1988 while working with brother David for a Silvio's Pizza franchise in Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast, Rob met someone who was to turn his world upside down! One afternoon a young woman came into the store seeking a part-time job delivering pizzas. Despite failing their hastily devised map test, they decided to give her a go as the weekend was going to be busy and they needed more staff. Ten weeks later Rob asked the now seasoned delivery driver to marry him. Lucky for him she accepted. After the wedding in July 1989 Aliki continued her studies at Griffith while Rob drove nightshift in the cabs.
Fastforward to 1993, when the young couple moved on to the Bible College of Queensland campus at Toowong where Rob was enrolled for a Bachelor of Minstry with a view to becoming a pastor. To facilitate preparing assignments Rob purchased a PC and installed the venerable WordPerfect 5.1 running on MS Dos. After a year or so he upgraded to a Windows 3.11 and MS Word. At the same time he got involved in working with a couple of the other guys on campus to implement a student computer complete with laser printer. It was clear that while computers were useful most people did not know the first thing about installing or maintaining them, and Rob often relished the challenge of getting things working and helping other students in purchase equipement that was going to do what they needed.
Once in fultime ministry Rob asked to coordinate song lyrics for denomination state conference using a shiny new data projector and a windows 95 laptop using Power Point. When the laptop crashed mid service Rob vowed to learn more about computing and data projection in particular. Several years later at the Spingwood Church of Christ he implemented a projection system. Importantly this new system allowed for twin screens with a master control screen and separate output screen. As the church grew Rob registered their first domain and created their first website. He also implemented a file and imap email server that utilised Linux. The was much learning involved in creating the network but for the most part things went smoothly.
In the late nineties Rob met Daniel Bingham. Daniel had his own IT company providing support to small business and home users and Rob immediately realised that Daniel would be able to help him learn more about networks and servers, and how to build his own PC. After spending some time working as a team, they eventually decided that it was more economically sound to get a job. As Aliki's music career began to launch Aliki and Rob began to create backing visuals to some of Aliki's songs. The response to these visuals surprised them both and together the realised that visual backing was a vital component of this fledgling ministry and so began to invest in expanding their resources and skills.
At about the same time Rob began web development to promote Alik's music, again there was a very positive response and the website grew. Having purchased Macromedia Studio, Dreamweaver was the tool of choice. However when they decided to take the family on the road fultime in mid 2004 it became clear to Rob that something would need to change as it was difficult to borrow a phone line and dial into the server every few days to ensure that the calendar stayed up to date.
